Almost escaping from an Otis redding song’s, West Oakland literally is sitting on the dock of the bay. Very striking example of gentrification, Oakland has suffered for the past few years from a major real estate crisis. With no warning San Francisco started to disgorge furiously on its bay, striking Oakland first and more massively due to its lower rent. The latter being easily explained from the appalling crime rates sticking to the city’s reputation and a limited educational system. The West side of the city however remained -for now- quite authentic. Between highways and massive docks, landscape is made of asphalt and damaged victorian houses that look abandoned. Soothed in an amazing light coming straight from the bay’s gap, this area lives at the rhythm of a sultry heartbeat.
